Antique Tiffany style lamp and shade before and after repair. Tiffany shade had numerous broken glass pieces around the top cap. The solder joints had been painted a thick glossy black color. Broken glass pieces were replaced and the solder joints restored to their original beautiful copper patina color. Tiffany style lamp base had numerous layers of black and brown paints which were removed and restored with a period bronze finish. Rewired with period solid brass patina sockets and antique style rayon cord.

ANTIQUE REVERSE PAINTED SLAG LAMP SHADE REPAIR IN PROGRESS: 3 panels were broken each very highly decorated. We have already replaced the broken panels, acid etched and painted background colors. Next the glass and painting will be baked then our artist will hand paint the floral decoration on each of the 3 panels, then a final baking.

Nearly destroyed slag lamp shade frame broken apart in many pieces, stretched and twisted out of shape. The shade was baked repeatedly to soften the metal, worked by hand with leather gloves while still hot. Many new breaks appeared during this process. A wooden form was built to recreate the dome curve and another wooden form to recreate the bottom curve. Solder joints were reinforced with copper sheeting. The repaired shade was slightly more stable than original.

SLAG LAMP and SHADE REPAIR
Glass replacement is a very routine repair for us. Customers ship their broken lamps and shades to us from all over the country. We regularly repair Tiffany, slag, curved glass and flat glass lamps and shades similar to yours. This type glass is custom not a stock item. We provide professional repairs, appraisals, invoices and estimates for insurance companies, freight companies, moving companies, service companies, estates, etc.

Creating curved or bent glass panels:
1) A flat sheet of stained glass is selected which is very close to the original glass.
2) A paper template is created to match your glass size/shape from which a new glass piece is cut from a flat sheet of stained glass.
3) Curved glass requires a custom made ceramic like mold to match your glass shape/size. The mold is hand made and cooked in a kiln.
4) After the mold is created and cured, the flat glass piece is positioned on the custom mold then baked for 24 hours to create the curve.
5) Sometimes a 2nd or 3rd mold and baking may be necessary but this does not effect your repair cost.
6) The completed curved glass is then cut and shaped by hand on a diamond/water grinder to fit into the shade frame.
7) Final adjustments of glass and frame work are made so that the entire piece is secure. Often glass holder tabs must be replaced or soldered onto the shade frame.

Metal filigree (decorative overlay) is sometimes missing or broken from the shade frame. New filigree can be created and fit back into the missing areas then refinished to match the rest of the frame.
