Many were unshielded and simply left on tables with open flames. Others were raised on pedestals with stone or glass reflectors to direct the light upward and outwards. These glass and stone shades were in use at least as early as the beginning of the Christian era.
Most of us think of lamp shades that sit upon a light source and shield the eyes from that light. Some of the first lamp shades of this type were metal shades used in Paris France around the late 1700's. The shade was adjustable so that it could be lowered as the candle burned down.
