Repair A Lamp ?
article by Jim Hoyle
How To Repair A Table Lamp or Floor Lamp ? The internet is loaded with all
kinds of instructions, even videos on this subject. Sorry for any
disappointment but if you had seen even a small portion of the "do it yourself"
nightmares that we have received in our lamp shop since 1979, you would
understand how I feel. We strongly suggest that you not attempt a lamp repair by
yourself unless you are experienced and qualified. If you are then no further instruction should be necessary.
There are just too many variables and too much to risk. Today there are many new
socket configurations and many electrical cord types among numerous other issues
to take into account. You cannot simply connect an electrical cord to two socket
screws and expect it to be safe. It makes more sense to have this type of repair
done at a professional lamp shop.
Good news !
Lamp repair companies generally do rewire type repairs at a very nominal
charge. Most use it a loss leader service just to get
people in their store. You will likely find that a lamp shop will do the
work for less than what it costs you in travel expenses plus parts.
We sell lamp parts in our brick and mortar store and it is very common to see a
customer return 2-3 times to get an additional lamp part that they later
determined was necessary to complete their lamp repair. By the time they
completed the repair they could have paid us to repair several lamps.
